How Often Should You Replace a Glock Recoil Spring? Round Count Guide by Model

Every recoil spring has a service life. It’s one of the few wear items on a Glock that isn’t obvious when it’s failing — there’s no warning light, no sudden stoppage. The slide just starts behaving a little differently until one day something doesn’t cycle right. Knowing when to swap it out before that happens is basic maintenance, and the intervals are straightforward once you know your model.

What the recoil spring actually does

The recoil spring (technically the recoil spring assembly on modern Glocks) does two jobs:

  • Absorbs recoil energy after firing — it slows the slide as it travels rearward so the frame doesn’t take the full impact.
  • Returns the slide to battery — it pushes the slide forward to strip the next round from the magazine and lock the barrel into the slide.

When the spring weakens, both jobs suffer. The slide hits harder at the rear of its travel (more felt recoil, more frame wear) and returns forward with less force (feeding and lockup issues).

Replacement intervals by model

These are conservative intervals based on factory guidance and common armorer recommendations. If you shoot higher-pressure loads (+P or +P+), shorten the interval by about 20–25%.

Full-size: Glock 17, Glock 34 (9mm)

Replace every 3,000–5,000 rounds. Full-size frames handle spring fatigue more gracefully because of the longer slide travel and heavier slide mass, so you have a wider service window. Most shooters land around 4,000 rounds before noticing any change.

Compact: Glock 19 (9mm)

Replace every 2,500–4,000 rounds. The shorter slide and lighter mass mean the spring is doing proportionally more work per cycle. The Glock 19 is the highest-volume model we see, and spring replacement is the single most common maintenance item owners ask about.

Subcompact: Glock 26 (9mm)

Replace every 2,000–3,500 rounds. Smaller frame, shorter spring, harder life. Subcompacts run their springs closer to the limit with every cycle.

Slimline: Glock 43, Glock 43X, Glock 48 (9mm)

Replace every 2,000–3,000 rounds. The single-stack and slimline models use a captive recoil spring assembly that’s smaller and lighter than the double-stack versions. The spring fatigues faster, and the symptoms tend to show up sooner — especially on the Glock 43, which has the shortest slide travel of the group.

.40 S&W and .45 ACP models (Glock 22, Glock 23, Glock 21, Glock 30)

Replace every 2,000–3,000 rounds. Higher-pressure cartridges and heavier slides put more stress on the spring per cycle. The .40 models in particular are known for accelerating spring wear compared to their 9mm counterparts on the same frame size.

How to tell your spring is worn

You won’t always hit a round count and notice a problem on cue. Here are the real-world symptoms that tell you it’s time, regardless of what your shot log says:

  • Failure to return to battery. The slide doesn’t fully close after firing. This is the most common symptom and the most important one. If you’re seeing this, read our guide to slides not going into battery — spring wear is one of the top causes.
  • Brass ejecting farther or more erratically than usual. A weaker spring lets the slide travel faster and farther to the rear, which changes ejection angle and distance.
  • More felt recoil than you remember. A worn spring absorbs less energy on the rearward stroke, so more of that impulse reaches your hand.
  • Slide feels “mushy” when hand-racked. A fresh spring has a crisp, consistent resistance. A worn one feels soft or uneven, especially at the end of travel.
  • Nose-dive feeding failures. The slide returns forward with less force, and rounds can stub into the feed ramp instead of chambering cleanly.

What happens if you don’t replace it

A recoil spring doesn’t snap dramatically. It just gets progressively weaker. The consequences build gradually:

  1. Feeding gets slightly less reliable — maybe one malfunction per 500 rounds.
  2. The slide batters the frame harder with each cycle, accelerating wear on the frame rails and locking block.
  3. Extraction and ejection patterns get inconsistent, which can lead to stovepipes or double feeds.
  4. In a worst case, the slide doesn’t have enough energy to strip a round at all, and the gun becomes a single-shot.

None of this happens overnight. That’s what makes it easy to ignore — and why a round count interval matters more than waiting for symptoms.

Tips for getting the most life out of a spring

  • Don’t store the slide locked back. Leaving the spring compressed for extended periods accelerates fatigue. If you store your Glock with the slide forward (as designed), the spring rests at its natural length.
  • Match the spring to the slide. If you’re running an aftermarket slide that’s lighter or heavier than factory, the factory spring weight may not be optimal. A mismatched spring wears out faster because it’s working outside its design window.
  • Buy in pairs. Recoil springs are cheap. Having a spare on hand means you can swap on your schedule instead of diagnosing a malfunction at the range.
