Why Handguard Length Matters
Your AR-15 handguard length needs to match your barrel length and gas system. Too long and it extends past the muzzle or blocks your muzzle device. Too short and you lose rail space and may leave the gas block exposed. Getting this right is straightforward once you understand the relationship between barrel length, gas system length, and handguard dimensions.
The Basic Rule
The handguard must be shorter than the barrel. If the handguard extends past the barrel’s muzzle, you cannot install a muzzle device — and depending on the handguard profile, the bullet may strike the inside of the rail on exit. A good minimum clearance is 0.5 inches between the end of the handguard and the shoulder of the muzzle device.
The handguard should also be long enough to cover the gas block. An exposed gas block collects heat, gets in the way of a forward grip, and looks unfinished on a free-float build. Most builders prefer a handguard that extends at least 1 inch past the gas block.
Gas System Length Reference
The gas system determines where the gas block sits on the barrel. That position dictates the minimum useful handguard length:
- Pistol length — gas block at approximately 4 inches from the receiver
- Carbine length — gas block at approximately 7 inches
- Mid-length — gas block at approximately 9 inches
- Rifle length — gas block at approximately 12 inches
Your handguard needs to extend past these positions to cover the gas block.
Common Barrel and Handguard Pairings
Here are the most common barrel lengths and the handguard sizes that work with each:
- 16-inch barrel, carbine gas — 10 to 15 inch handguard. A 13-inch handguard is the sweet spot: covers the gas block with room to spare and leaves clearance for the muzzle device. A 15-inch handguard works but sits close to the muzzle — verify clearance with your specific muzzle device.
- 16-inch barrel, mid-length gas — 12 to 15 inch handguard. Mid-length gas pushes the gas block further out, so a 12-inch handguard is the minimum for full coverage. 13 or 15 inches both work well.
- 18-inch barrel, rifle gas — 13 to 15 inch handguard. Rifle-length gas puts the block at 12 inches, so 13 is the minimum. A 15-inch handguard gives a clean look without crowding the muzzle.
- 10.5-inch barrel, carbine gas — 9 to 10 inch handguard. Tight clearances here. Measure twice.
- 7.5-inch barrel, pistol gas — 7 inch handguard maximum. Very little margin. A 6.5 or 7-inch rail is typical.
Free-Float vs. Drop-In
Free-float handguards mount to the barrel nut and do not contact the barrel at any point. This improves accuracy because the barrel can vibrate freely without interference from the handguard. Most modern AR-15 handguards are free-float designs using M-LOK or Picatinny rail systems.
Drop-in handguards use a delta ring and handguard cap to clamp around the barrel. They are simpler to install but contact the barrel, and their length is fixed by the gas system — you cannot extend a drop-in past the front sight base. If you want to choose your handguard length, go free-float.
Measuring for Fitment
If you are unsure about clearance, measure from the front face of the upper receiver to the muzzle of your barrel. Subtract 1.5 inches for muzzle device clearance. That is your maximum handguard length.
Also check the inner diameter of the handguard against your gas block diameter. Most low-profile gas blocks are 0.750 inches and fit inside standard handguards. Bull barrels or adjustable gas blocks with larger profiles may need a handguard with a wider inner diameter.
Pick the Right Length First
Barrel length determines gas system. Gas system determines minimum handguard length. Muzzle device determines maximum handguard length.
