It depends on the direction. A Gen 4 slide does not fit a Gen 3 Glock 17/19/22/23-size frame without cutting the frame, which we don't recommend. A Gen 3 slide will mount and run on a Gen 4 frame of the same model if you use the Gen 3 single-spring recoil assembly, but it leaves a gap at the front of the dust cover and isn't a factory-supported pairing, so we don't recommend that either. Subcompacts (G26/G27/G33) are the exception: their Gen 3 and Gen 4 slides generally interchange. Details below.
Their handguns are known for their reliability and accuracy, making them a top choice for those who demand the best in their equipment.
In this article, the firearms experts at 3CR Tactical focus on a specific aspect of Glock handguns: the interoperability of their slides. Specifically, we answer the question: can you change slides on a Glock?
Are Glock Gen 3 Slides Compatible with Gen 4 Frames?
Not as a factory-supported pairing. A Gen 3 slide does mount on a Gen 4 frame of the same model and has been reported to run, as long as you use the Gen 3 single-spring recoil assembly — the recoil spring assembly always goes with the slide. It leaves a gap at the front of the dust cover. An adapter plate fills it, and we'd recommend one, because the gap can let the recoil assembly shift and wear. It is not advised for a duty or carry gun.
The recoil spring in Gen 4 slides is a dual-spring system, while Gen 3 slides use a single-spring system. Gen 4 slides also have a larger hole in the front of the slide to accommodate the dual-spring system. That is why a Gen 4 slide can't go the other way: its dual-spring assembly doesn't fit the narrower recoil channel at the front of a Gen 3 full-size or compact frame.
Some aftermarket slides are listed for a range of generations, like this Brownells RMR Cut Black Nitride Slide for the Glock 26 (Gen 1–4) — subcompacts are the one family where Gen 3 and Gen 4 slides generally interchange. Always go by the generations the slide maker lists.
What is the Difference Between Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock Slides?
The differences between Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock slides are relatively subtle but significant. The most notable difference is the dual-spring recoil system used in Gen 4 slides.
This system provides better recoil management, reduced felt recoil, and faster follow-up shots. The other well-known Gen 4 changes are on the frame, not the slide: an enlarged magazine release that is reversible for left-handed shooters, and a more aggressive grip texture that gives a more secure hold in wet or muddy conditions.
